Amazon Experience / Colombia, Peru or Brazil?

Comparison

The Amazon in Colombia, Peru or Brazil: which one?

Three countries share the same forest and the experience is not the same in any of them. Here is an honest comparison from an operator who works across all three borders.

Updated November 2026

The Amazon is one forest and nine countries, and the trip changes completely depending on where you enter it. Colombia, Peru and Brazil are the three most common gateways, and each has a different personality.

This is not a neutral comparison: we are based in Leticia, on the Colombian side. But we also cross into Peru and Brazil on a normal week, so we will tell you where each one wins.

Colombia · Leticia: the easiest and most affordable

Peru · Iquitos: the big river and the cruises

Brazil · Manaus: comfort and scale

How to choose

A practical detail: from Leticia you can visit Peru and Brazil without documents, thanks to the tri-border agreement. That makes it the only one of the three where one trip covers three countries.

The honest summary

If you have three to five days and want to see the real forest without spending a fortune, Leticia is hard to beat. If you have a week or more and want a cruise or a huge reserve, Peru and Brazil are worth the extra money. And if you are already in Colombia, there is no reason to fly to another country to see the Amazon: it is four hundred kilometres from Bogotá and it is the same forest.

Quick questions

Is the Amazon in Colombia the same as in Brazil?

It is the same forest and the same river, but the access, the tourism infrastructure and the communities are different. Colombia is the cheapest and most accessible for short trips.

Can I visit all three from Leticia?

Yes. Thanks to the tri-border agreement you can be in Brazil and Peru the same day, and with a stamp you can continue further.

Where is the wildlife better?

Peru and Brazil have larger protected areas and more remote spots. Colombia has good wildlife close to the city, which for a short trip matters more.

Do I need a visa for Colombia?

Most Western travellers do not need one for tourism stays of up to 90 days. Check your nationality before booking.
